Popular Smartphones Are in Short Supply This Summer

Posted by Mobile Tech Today on July 13th, 2010
CNN has dubbed 2010 the "summer of the smartphone shortage." Indeed, this summer may go down in smartphone history for the record shortages of high-profile mobile devices that consumers are clamoring for.

At the heart of the shortage are three of the summer's most popular devices: The HTC Droid Incredible from Verizon Wireless, the HTC EVO 4G from Sprint Nextel, and, of course, Apple's controversial iPhone 4. There are also iPad shortages.

Would-be iPhone 4 owners are told to wait three weeks for their shiny new device. Verizon is telling customers it will be sometime in August before the Incredible is in stock. The HTC EVO 4G is sold out indefinitely.

Why so many shortages? And does this set the stage for Motorola to steal market share with the Droid X?

The iShortage

According to Avi Greengart, an analyst at Current Analysis, you have to look at each device individually to determine reasons for the shortfalls. In the case of the iPhone 4, Apple did well out of the gate, fulfilling more than one million units in the first few days, then selling about two million units over the course of the first week. But Apple couldn't keep up with demand.

"In Apple's case, the shortage comes from a combination of incredible demand and possible supply constraints. I don't know how many units Apple could have manufactured in time for launch. But this has by far been the strongest launch for Apple of all time," said Greengart, noting that Apple is facing a similar dilemma with the iPad.

It seems Apple expected strong sales, but not quite so strong, especially for the iPad. With the iPhone 4, the demand was just greater than Apple anticipated.

An Incredible Delay

Then there's the Droid Incredible. HTC is hindered by a constrained supply of screens from its supplier, Samsung....

ARPA-E: 43 Grants Announced

Posted by Sam Churchill on July 13th, 2010

U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu announced this week 43 cutting-edge research projects that aim to dramatically improve how the U.S. uses and produces energy (pdf).

Funded with $92 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act through the Department of Energy’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E), this week’s selections focus on accelerating innovation in green technology, grid scale energy storage, power electronics and building efficiency.

ARPA-E was funded for the first time last year with a $400 million budget to award grants for breakthrough clean-energy technologies. ARPA-E projects in 17 states were awarded this April.

The ARPA-E Summit last March, was captured by C/Net. ARPA-E announced grant solicitations earlier this year for grid storage to complement wind and solar power. The agency has already awarded $151 million to researchers developing methods for storing carbon dioxide underground and improving electric vehicle energy storage.

Meanwhile, General Electric and four venture-capital companies are putting up $200 million to award entrepreneurs for coming up with innovative ways to modernize the electricity grid.

At an event at San Francisco this week, the companies launched the “GE Ecomagination Challenge: Powering the Grid,” a competition designed to cultivate smart-grid technologies. The money is being made available by GE, Emerald Technology Partners, Foundation Capital, Rockport Capital, and Kleiner, Perkinsk, Caufield & Byers, each of which are investing in green-technology start-ups.

Best Health Apps

Posted by Sam Churchill on July 13th, 2010

There are now close to 6,000 consumer health apps, according to a review published in March by mobihealthnews, which reports on the mobile health industry, and more are being added every day. Many are free, or cost $1 to $10 to download.

In January, Consumer Reports listed about a dozen health apps for various types of phones — including a few exercise and calorie trackers.

They include:

Health & Wellness

Health professionals/students

The Medical Blog has reduced over 1,200 “Health” apps in the Android Marketplace to 18 categories and 60 apps, designed for doctors, nurses and students in their list of The Best Android Apps for Doctors, Nurses and Health Care Professionals. A lot of the same brand name apps were also listed in their Best Medical iPhone Apps list.

But, reports the LA Times, some physicians are concerned about the reliability of the medical information provided by many of these apps, which offer advice and information on a wide array of health topics, including how to find a doctor, first aid for an emergency and exercise instructions.

“Consumers are largely on their own; there is no organization that is policing, monitoring, or rating things like medical accuracy and consumer friendliness,” says Dr. Joseph Kim, a physician and the founder and blogger for several websites, including medicalsmartphones.com.

“Type ‘diabetes’ into an app-store search engine, you can find a huge list of apps, but you have no way of knowing which ones are good and which you should avoid, and as a result, consumers may download apps that contain erroneous information,” he says. He advises discussing apps you’re considering with a healthcare professional.

Alvarion on TD-LTE Bandwagon

Posted by Sam Churchill on July 13th, 2010

Alvarion today announced support for the upcoming TD-LTE standard, by incorporating it into its 4Motion solution family. Alvarion expects to engage in TD-LTE field trials in the first quarter of 2011.

Alvarion has played a key role in creating the WiMAX standard and claims it was the first to offer a 4G platform using TDD spectrum in early 2006. Its 4Motion solution was designed to optimize networks using this spectrum. The company stresses it will continue to actively drive the WiMAX standardization activities.

“Our primary aim is to offer tailored broadband wireless solutions which can also evolve along with customers’ needs. Our development effort over the past two years has been designed to accommodate the support for TD-LTE as a natural extension of our existing solution,” said Eran Gorev, president and CEO of Alvarion. “We are moving full speed ahead both with our ongoing WiMAX development to bring the latest 802.16e enhancements, as well as incorporating TD-LTE into our platform.
